Ceiling installation “The Flock”, 2025

In July 2024, the Maduro&Curiel’s Bank approached me with the question if I could create an artwork for their new branch, located in shopping mall Sambil. The space featured an enormous industrial ceiling with a height of 6 meters and the artwork was supposed to be situated there.

I accepted the challenge and began designing an abstract bird shape, considering the available materials on the island, ease of reproduction, weight, attachment methods for the uneven and high ceiling, etc.

Realizing I couldn’t execute this alone, I asked Marcel van Duijneveldt to assist me. He ingeniously designed a system to hang the birds. We created a maquette to visualize the space, the flight path of the birds, and the length of the fishing line for each bird. The body and the wings were cut out of pvc panel using waterjet cutting technique. After that I assembled the birds and attached the wires.

“The Flock” transforms the industrial space of the bank into an inviting and dynamic environment and represents freedom and movement, community and cooperation.

The artwork’s fluid, organic movement may create a sense of tranquility and wonder, making the banking experience even more pleasant and engaging.

Overall, “The Flock” not only enhances the visual appeal of the bank but also aligns with themes of aspiration, cooperation, and positive transformation.”
